<br />
The engine still runs just fine and the transmission probably works, although I can't tell because a brake line and clutch line have snapped. The left front steering knuckle is broken, and the passenger side body is crushed.<br />
<br />
I would love to believe that I will one day go out there with a sawsall, chop the body off, make a tube frame, and pre-runner it. But I just don't know.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-87855877695909692422013-05-08T20:03:00.000-07:002013-05-08T20:04:21.479-07:00New bikes! - surprisingly, they're not vintage.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I can't believe it's been over two months since my last post. It's not like I've been slacking off though, I've just been extremely busy at the shop.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, I managed to bring home a couple more bikes.<br />
<br />
First off, a 1999 VFR800FI<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-U6E0joKPWbc/UX8pWkNqFYI/AAAAAAAAW0s/nooQk5lMUww/w713-h951-no/IMG_20130429_221525.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-U6E0joKPWbc/UX8pWkNqFYI/AAAAAAAAW0s/nooQk5lMUww/w713-h951-no/IMG_20130429_221525.jpg" /></a></div>
...of which I seem to have no pictures. Well no pictures of it in one piece at least.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgmTFUsCWpCAFkk_akhzWZki5AQQSWWrthSB9lAw4WP9aOSaHqYvwk3cxkt58L_yJFlWJqbX_B15LA4vY-TDdXunOd1PEi9orEBNDl7Cs1PPq3BinMrtFQ2zSrS1_RYdRdqOU-41Qhauw/s1600/IMG_20130426_091218.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgmTFUsCWpCAFkk_akhzWZki5AQQSWWrthSB9lAw4WP9aOSaHqYvwk3cxkt58L_yJFlWJqbX_B15LA4vY-TDdXunOd1PEi9orEBNDl7Cs1PPq3BinMrtFQ2zSrS1_RYdRdqOU-41Qhauw/s1600/IMG_20130426_091218.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Then about 2 weeks later this beautiful 1996 CBR600 F3 followed me back to the shop.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2tqbNfyQQSg/UYsQ-gWkQRI/AAAAAAAAXIs/tG17SOjGy78/s1600/IMG_20130508_225545.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2tqbNfyQQSg/UYsQ-gWkQRI/AAAAAAAAXIs/tG17SOjGy78/s1600/IMG_20130508_225545.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vwxyLapI5CY/UXSySNLfSLI/AAAAAAAAWlg/BJABgSh9qik/s1600/Q3wLUnx.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vwxyLapI5CY/UXSySNLfSLI/AAAAAAAAWlg/BJABgSh9qik/s1600/Q3wLUnx.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It didn't stay together all that long either...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3D5NhWlZ3oqGo6E5qp5whGcihXmeM0Lwto6GdeSalmXOTB7eBGYkxyrbqiXP_YCBg_sh7CvcNJaRSSrHU6RNJTRA61zEeoieSK0hav5bqtwTv3Rv91ZZhOuu5y1bj8CuwSVxScG4nopA/s1600/IMG_20130422_170904.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3D5NhWlZ3oqGo6E5qp5whGcihXmeM0Lwto6GdeSalmXOTB7eBGYkxyrbqiXP_YCBg_sh7CvcNJaRSSrHU6RNJTRA61zEeoieSK0hav5bqtwTv3Rv91ZZhOuu5y1bj8CuwSVxScG4nopA/s1600/IMG_20130422_170904.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Currently both bikes are awaiting some new parts. The VFR has a laundrylist of things the PO lied to me about. I'll be replacing the seat, regulator, headlight, chain + sprockets, tires, rear master cyl and eventually swapping the front forks and de-linking braking system.<br />
<br />
The CBR only has 6500miles and is in immaculate condition. After I finish cleaning the carbs, it will be receiving a K&N air filter, new jets, carb insulator boots, and a lot of attention.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-88378629915284263062013-02-28T20:59:00.002-08:002013-02-28T20:59:48.775-08:00Back on two wheels - the CB360<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The CB360 is finally back on two wheels again. I put the rear end on Saturday, the rebuilt front end on yesterday, and today was the engine and other little bits.</div>

In all honesty I really have no clue how those rollers popped out without the plate coming off the rotor. But they went back in without a problem, so no worries, I guess.<br />

I'm still going over the wiring harness and looking for issues with the electrical system. So far I need a regulator, and somehow I can't seem to find the stator anywhere. Carb insulator boots are on their way along with a new headlight mount bracket. </div>

<br />
I finished washing the motor in the parts washer. It came mostly clean. It's not perfect, but I'm not about to wire wheel the whole thing either.<br />
<br />
I cleaned up the frame and decided not to repaint it. To be honest I'm just really lazy and don't feel like even attempting it. There's only a few spots with little scratches and touches of surface rust. I'm just going to convert the rust, spray it with clear, and call it a day.<br />
<br />
The brakes did get some special attention though. The front caliper needed to be rebuilt, so I disassembled it and spent about an hour trying to get the piston out. I blocked the bleeder hole and screwed a fitting to connect the air hose to the brake line inlet. After lots of scrubbing, and smacking it with a hammer, and applying lots of pressure via the attached air hose, the piston shot out with a loud *POP*, bounced over my shoe and skipped all the way across the shop.<br />
Surprisingly there was only a light bit of pitting on the piston, and only in places where it didn't REALLY matter. The caliper body looked really gross inside though: lots of dried crud (from brake fluid) behind the piston seal.<br />
<br />
I neglected to get any pictures of the action, but here's one I forgot to post the other day:<br />
<br />

I'm sick of just shuffling it around so I decided to use my lunch break to give it a once over and see what needed to be fixed to get her running.<br />
<br />
I started by cleaning a few things up, and looking to see if anything was missing or needed to be replaced, but I ended up with this:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/8zfmQOf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/8zfmQOf.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/t0jBorH.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/t0jBorH.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/lX3tbzC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/lX3tbzC.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/Zquo8gs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/Zquo8gs.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/eatWZwc.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/eatWZwc.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/3QAdsMi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/3QAdsMi.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
I guess it's time to restore her.<br />
<br />
All in all she looks pretty good but needs a few things: rebuilt master cylinder and caliper, carb boots, a few rubber bits, regulator, I've already rebuilt the carbs, as well as touched up the paint on the toolbox, airbox, swingarm, and battery basket.<br />
With everything apart I'm taking the time to clean up all the parts before reassembly. The engine is in the parts washer, the frame is about to get scrubbed, I took the surface rust and grit off the shocks, and polished a bunch of bolts.<br />
<br />
Hopefully I'll have everything (minus the parts that need to be ordered) reassembled next week. I still have some maintenance to do before then; valves, forks, chain, steering head, wheel bearings, and oil change at least.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-69815783649300148562013-01-02T20:00:00.000-08:002013-01-02T20:00:05.750-08:00I'm sorry.It's been well over three months since my last post, and I would like to apologize.<br />It's not for lack of content, or progress, really. It's for lack of time and inclination.<br />
To sum up the last few months in a word: it's been "complicated." Somehow cleaning the garage turned into me rebuilding the shed, cleaning my living space, and renovating my closet, and fixing some plumbing... Like I said, "complicated." Oh yeah and a Miata followed me home.<br />
<br />
<br />
Since I started working at Brooks' Cycle Center my life has been kicked into high gear.<br />
My urge to wrench, fix, and mend is satisfied during the normal 9-5 so I'm happy. I've even picked up a second job working nights at a hospital to help supplement my income (work is slow in the winter).<br />However, when I come home in the evening I have to walk through a veritable graveyard of bikes and it's become quite depressing. Every day the same thing, watch other peoples bikes come and go while mine get neglected. So, I've begun to sort through my mess of a garage and shitpile of a bike collection. I wish I could say it was a Zen process of "pick up this part and place over here," but with 2 jobs and way too many other things demanding my time, it has been nothing but stressful.<br />
<br />
But, with a new year comes a new attitude. I've managed to put a good dent in my workload and I'm ready to start prioritizing projects. I owe a number of people some motorcycles, and those of you who have been waiting have been all too patient.<br />
Elrich, you're at the top of my list, despite the fact that Joey's bike is making some horrible top end noises.<br />
<br />
Now if only I could figure out what the fuck to do with this thing:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/zUdXfh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/zUdXfh.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/OdXSEh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/OdXSEh.jpg" /></a></div>

Basically, I did a lot of nothing for a really long time then got a job.<br />
<br />
I lucked out real hard and got a job as a motorcycle mechanic.<br />
My new employer is <a href="http://www.brookscycle.com/" target="_blank">Brooks' Cycle Center</a>. Please check them out and if you're in the area swing by and see us.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, I will be cleaning out the shed, and garage, sorting tools, etc... I might post some garage porn once I'm done. After that I really need to get back on the horse with Elrich's CB750F that man has been too patient up to this point, and I really need to finish his build.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-75453005485137673842012-08-09T23:10:00.000-07:002012-08-09T23:10:33.471-07:00CB125 shakedownThe CB125 seems to be up and running well. I think I might go up a size in the main jet. It's a 110 now but I think it could stand to be a little richer at full throttle. The pilot jet got bumped up from a 38 to a 40 and that seems to be doing nicely. That's it for now hopefully with this little guy out of the way I'll start getting some other bikes knocked out.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-22330218208614808632012-08-07T14:56:00.002-07:002012-08-07T14:58:46.489-07:00She purrs like a machine gunI figured out the reason the CB125 wouldn't start. After many attempts the best I could do was to get it to backfire through the carb. This told me that it had to be a problem with the ignition timing but no matter what I did I couldn't get it to time correctly.<br />
<br />
That is until I decided to take a closer look at the points advancer.<br />

<br />
I replaced the piston and rings, and had the cylinder bored .25 over. There was still a leak.<br />
I replaced the exhaust valve (the one that was leaking). There was another (worse) leak.<br />
I replace the intake valve. The leaking stopped and the motor held compression. 130ish psi.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/XEAwo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i.imgur.com/XEAwo.jpg"></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/ckWmH.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i.imgur.com/ckWmH.jpg"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/yllxU.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://i.imgur.com/yllxU.jpg"></a></div>
<br />
Hells yeah.<br />
<br />
Now that I've taken care of all that I've been trying to start the bike for a few days now. I have all the necessities: fuel, compression, spark. The valve adjustment has been performed about a half dozen times just to be ONE-HUNDRED-PERCENT sure it's right. The cam timing has been done the same number of times, and the ignition timing I lost count of somewhere around twenty.<br />
I even pulled the motor went over everything one last time, then pulled and checked the carb, then the fuel tank (the petcock screen was a little dirty with aluminum oxide), I even replaced the carb to engine gaskets, gave the exhaust a new crush gasket and still got nothing.<br />
<br />
Hopefully the next post will detail the awesomeness of my success and not some other catastrophic discovery.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-66015274780982928082012-08-02T13:08:00.003-07:002012-08-02T15:51:17.304-07:00CB125 Head WorkSo I buttoned up the motor with the new piston and leakdown tested it. I gained about 4% - putting it well into the 'acceptable' range. However it's still not quite where I want it and I can hear a definite hiss coming from the head. So off came the head and out came the exhaust valve since it was the most proximate to where the hiss was loudest.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/NZfdR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/NZfdR.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The best way to prevent the loss of ferrous parts is to keep them bundled together with a magnet. In this case a rare earth magnet out of a harddrive.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/21aEo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/21aEo.jpg" /></a></div>

<br />
After pulling the valve I checked for burrs, carbon buildup and any obvious damage.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/uM9sr.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/uM9sr.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The valve seats looked good and I didn't see any damage to the valve. There was a bit of carbon buildup though. The valve itself also had a bit too much play in the guide. It rocked back and forth about half a millimeter, which is WELL over the limit according to the FSM spec. A new valve will be taking its place soon.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/Ib5PG.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/Ib5PG.jpg" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/p36XD.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/p36XD.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">I cleaned the carbon buildup from the exhaust ports. I'm debating on whether or not to port the intake and exhaust tunnels.</span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/3vzGH.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/3vzGH.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
On a very serious side note, it is always good practice to wear safety gear when working on bikes; gloves, protective glasses, etc...<br />
Little did I know that in this case the requisite safety gear for valve spring removal includes a cup. Yes, a cup, like the ones baseball catchers and football players wear. I had the valve spring fly off and nail me straight in the barracks. That put an end to my night. Recovery beer and a good night's sleep and I should be good to go at it tomorrow.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-8378178663017131582012-07-31T11:26:00.000-07:002012-07-31T11:27:57.949-07:00.25 over the line - new CB125 piston installed.I found a spare hour to drop the new piston into the freshly bored CB125 engine.<br />

<br />
Well that was fast. So much for the 6 week turn around time I was quoted. <a href="http://www.rb-designs.com/">RB Designs</a> had that cylinder bored out and shipped back to my door in under a week! That's exceptional by itself, and absolutely stunning when you consider that they're all the way on the west coast and I'm in VA.
They must have had it bored and shipped out the same day they received it.<br />

In fact it seems worse now.
I pulled and inspected the rings, reassembled and measured and they seemed fine and within specs but the cylinder is now showing a 12% (best reading) loss. That's about 3% worse than before.
I can hear the hiss coming from the crankcase as the cylinder bleeds air. The only logical explanation is the piston and/or rings.
Rather than screw around with it any longer I'm just going to have it bored .25mm over and go from there. I'm not even going reassemble it fully to do a compression test.
On the upside the head seems fine and I guess I won't be needing those new valves I bought :-/gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-61535034499195127942012-07-13T10:02:00.000-07:002012-07-13T10:04:28.309-07:00CB125 parts motorI pulled the motor out of the CB125 parts bike yesterday. The dowel came out easily and has found a new home in the good CB125 motor. Funny thing though, this motor was also missing a dowel; just a different one than the good motor.</div>gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-88044986975242649942012-07-11T23:03:00.004-07:002012-07-12T06:03:00.077-07:00Finding the source of the CB125 compression issueWell I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep a wink without knowing why the hell the CB125 motor won't hold compression. Seeing as how I can use all the beauty rest I can get (I am not a pretty man) I cracked into the motor as soon as I got home this afternoon.<br />
<br />
It took about 20 minutes to get the motor off the bike, partly because I was slacking, and partly because I got distracted a bit. Once the motor was off, the hunt was on...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/LGqnh.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/LGqnh.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
It took about another 20 minutes to get the motor apart because I completely forgot that I needed to remove the rear axle to pull the rotor again.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One... Two... Shit.</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/iBCy6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/iBCy6.png" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Well I somehow missed that there are supposed to be dowels around three of the cylinder studs. Probably because that one was missing to begin with.<br />
Do I think this is the cause of my problem? Probably not, at least not entirely. I'm gonna replace it though and see how that affects things before I start boring out cylinders and cutting valve seats.<br />
<br />
Now here's the kicker... I don't really feel like waiting 2+ weeks to get a 10x14mm dowel from Honda, and I don't have to. However, solving this issue ASAP requires me to deal with this:<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i.imgur.com/Ot4k1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/Ot4k1.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Freshly hosed off, this baby is about to get torn to pieces.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Don't get me wrong, I am TOTALLY appreciative that this bike is here for the picking (props again to Bill Becker for hooking me up with this bike.) Unfortunately, the motor is completely seized and there isn't a single thing on this bike that isn't rusty, muddy, bent out of shape or all of the above. <span style="background-color: white;">Also the lack of a center stand should make things interesting.</span><br />
Given my lack of frustration so far, it's all I can do to not hang the bike by a noose around it's head and chop the motor out with a sawsall and a mechanical laugh. Before that happens though, I'm going to float the bike in some PB Blaster and call it a night. Maybe tomorrow will hold some good luck for me.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-79024145141062884462012-07-11T13:08:00.000-07:002012-07-11T13:09:56.714-07:00Well now I'm just confused...I'm taking another stab at working the CB125's issues out.<br />
Since I couldn't keep the cylinder at TDC for a leakdown test, I removed the tappet adjusters so the valves wouldn't engage at any point during the stroke. With the cylinder at BDC of both compression and exhaust stroke I got this:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i.imgur.com/ygDcX.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://i.imgur.com/ygDcX.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">85 out of 90psi is about a 10% loss</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I'm showing less than 10% loss. I know this is totally acceptable in larger bikes, but I'm not so sure if this is good for this particular bike. I'm going to remove the carburetor and exhaust entirely and re-do the compression test. We shall see how it goes from there. If that turns out okay I'm completely stumped and I suppose I should re-check my timing? It was spot on when I last looked, maybe all that kick-starting changed something though...gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-25375651989543900322012-06-27T12:39:00.000-07:002015-05-22T08:05:59.912-07:00The CB125<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I'd been looking for a good bike to use teach the girlfriend how to ride when I acquired a CB125 for a cheap sum:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/2L6x5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/2L6x5.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
Obviously it didn't run but the previous owner explained that it "had a new piston and should be an easy fix." In rebuilding the engine he had dropped a bolt down into the motor. Apparently that was the last straw and he was just looking to get rid of it, title and all.<br />
<br />
She was in fairly good shape but still needed a fair amount of work. Since I've had other projects on my hands she sat there just like that for a while. That was until recently when I got a wild hair to take a motorcycle with me to <a href="http://www.nomadicrootsfestival.com/">Nomadic Roots Festival</a> this year. With only about 2 weeks to go until the festy started, I jumped in with both feet.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">The goal: 2 weeks to take a basket case and make it run like the dickens, so I can ride it around this festival!</span></b><br />
Full album of all the pictures can be seen here: <a href="http://imgur.com/a/VZ5OQ#0">http://imgur.com/a/VZ5OQ#0</a><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span>
<span style="background-color: white;">The engine got tossed up on the work bench for a quick goin' over, and locating of the fugitive bolt.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/PZkKC.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/PZkKC.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
The whole thing broke down extremely easily. the whole process took about an hours worth of work and another hour's worth of beer drinking and research.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/6pRpF.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/6pRpF.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I ran into a bit of a snag when I hit the rotor though. I realized very quickly that I didn't have a rotor puller and didn't want to risk damaging the rotor by prying it out with screwdrivers. So, I thought to myself, "alright, a rotor puller is just a bolt right? What bolt do I have that will fit this?" After a number of attempts and failures I had an epiphany; I knew exactly where to find an M14x1.5 bolt.<br />

<br />
I didn't split the cases but I checked everything else; piston width, piston rings, oil pump, cylinder width, etc... The cylinder could use a good hone, possibly even a bore+hone but with only about two weeks till the festival, this wasn't in the cards. I decided to button it up and hope for the best.<br />

With the majority of the repairs done, it was time to prep her to run. I made a static timing light with a 12v light bulb, some gator clamps and some wire. Just a few more things and this bike should be ready for her first test run. I ordered a new 428 standard DID chain and 14t front and 35t rear JT sprockets from Manassas Honda. They mounted up fine, although the painted sprocket was difficult to get on the rear wheel. I wire wheeled the paint off the inside of the sprocket where it meets the hub and it slid on without an issue. I let the chain sit in a 50/50 mix of gear oil and 10w40 for 24 hours prior to mounting. I plan on oiling the chain with heavy weight gear lube from here on out.</div>

After I finished the major tasks I decided to spruce the bike up a bit more. I pulled the scrambler side pipe off the CL125, and performed electrolytic rust removal similar to the gas tank. This didn't remove as much rust as I'd had hoped so I nailed it with some Prep-N-Etch to get the rest. Unfortunately there was still an unacceptable amount of rust under the freshly converted black oxide, so I took a wire wheel to the whole thing. A couple hours later the pipe was cleaned but very obviously pitted and rough looking. To remedy this, I stole some of Elrich's header wrap, and wrapped it up nice and tight. The heat shield cleaned up pretty well and, despite being bent to shit, went back on easily. Although if I ever wrap another pipe I'll be sure to wear long sleeves. Some of the fiberglass (okay a lot of fiberglass) made it's way from the wrap to my skin and left me itching like I was buried in a hill of fire ants.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">SO ITCHY</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
From here on out I thought it would be smooth sailing. The exhaust went on without a fuss. A little bit of bending and hammering of the mount brackets was necessary to accommodate the increased thickness of the wrapped pipe, but all-in-all not too much effort was involved.<br />
<br />
By now I was completely stoked. I was just moments away from firing up the bike, but it was late so I decided to hold off until the morning. Unfortunately I was a bit TOO excited to sleep so I stayed up all night packing for <a href="http://www.nomadicrootsfestival.com/" target="_blank">Nomadic Roots</a> and preparing my gear. I also did a few little tasks to keep me busy; lube all the cables, pump up the tires, install sprocket cover, replace fuel lines, prepare a toolbox, wipe up any dirt and oil still on the bike, etc...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Six A.M. rolls around and I think that's late enough to start the bike and not piss off any neighbors, so I give it a go annnnnnd... nothing. Kicking for about 20 minutes and all I got was one measly backfire. So I checked the timing; it was fine, checked the valve lash; also fine. The spark plug could stand to be replaced, but it was sparking and properly gaped so that should at least get her running right? I checked the carbs and fuel was running to them. The spark plug was wet from gas so I know there's fuel getting to the cylinder. </div>
<div>
<br />
The three things a motor needs to run are: fuel, spark, and compression. I know I've got fuel and I know I've got spark, so I decide to face my worst fears and check compression.<br />
I used a pressure gauge with check valve to monitor the max compression while I kicked the bike over a few times. The highest it ever got was 60psi. Sixty psi isn't too bad right? It's a fairly small bike, maybe it's not a very high compression motor. Let's see what the manual has to say about this...<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i.imgur.com/6M3QK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://i.imgur.com/6M3QK.jpg" height="258" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fuck.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I tried to do a leakdown test but the pressure from the compressor kicks the motor over from TDC (compression stroke) and starts blowing air out of the exhaust. I tried to hold the motor by putting a wrench on the rotor bolt, but all that did was loosen the rotor bolt. I'm going to attempt to pressurize the cylinder while turning the rotor to see if the pressure drops anywhere throughout the whole range of the stroke. This will at least help eliminate piston rings as a problem.<br />
<br />
So that's how it ends. Anticlimactic, I know. I'm not going to have the bike finished by my deadline of tonight, and I'll be forced to WALK to the lake with the rest of the pedestrian plebes. I'm still itchy from all that fiberglass, and I'm very disappointed in my oversight of the compression problem, but I'm determined not to let that ruin my long weekend.<br />

Instead we decided that the raw aluminum will best match the rest of the bike so we're sticking to that.<br />
The rough sanding marks made in preparation for paint are going to be tough to overcome, but I think it'll be fine. Here's everything laid out for your viewing pleasure:<br />
<br />

Brakes, carbs, and electrical maintenanceThe K3 made an appearance over memorial day. She came back to have a new starter solenoid installed and because of a squealing noise coming from the front wheel, and bearing grease everywhere.<br />
It turns out that water and cable lube had run down into the speedo drive and made a mess all over the wheel. That was a simple fix; just remove wheel/disc/speedo drive, wipe clean, and replace grease. I also took the time to clean the speedo cable with kerosene and re-lube. While I had the kerosene out I cleaned and re-lubed the drive chain as well.<br />
The squeal was the result of a bad rotor. I swapped it for another one and all was well.<br />
Then the new starter solenoid went on (with some different mounting hardware than the original) and the bike looked good to go.<br />
<br />
This took all of about 2 hours to diagnose and repair, but I had all day off so I of course had a bad case of "while I'm in there."<br />
I pulled and cleaned out the new petcock. There was a bit of rust in it from the tank but nothing too bad.<br />
After this, I decided to take it for a test run to see if the new rotor was good to go. There was a problem though, the bike would NOT start. Actually it wouldn't even turn on. After checking everything I could I finally determined the ignition cylinder must be faulty. I pulled it and sure enough it was melted: completely fried. So I cut the wiring harness of of it and made a new "key" from the old wires by splicing the black to red and brown/white to brown, thereby emulating the ignition cylinder's "on" position when it is plugged in.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i.imgur.com/FEUUH.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i.imgur.com/FEUUH.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Not a key in the traditional sense, but it works.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
In order to make the new "key" easily accessible I had to relocate the harness plug, so off came the tank and headlight, out came the coils and the front of the wiring harness. I wish I had taken pictures of the whole process but I was on a roll, it was hot, and I didn't want to halt progress. The sooner I finished, the sooner I could take refuge from the heat.<br />
<br />
After relocating everything I figured I'd shorten up the spark plug wires a bit since they were a touch long. I removed the NGK resistor caps and wire sleeve to reveal... electrical tape? Fuck, electrical tape on spark plug wires is not a good sign.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/gbIka.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i.imgur.com/gbIka.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Sure enough the wires had an additional foot of wire spliced onto each of them. I have no idea why, but I'm glad it's taken care of. The downside however, is that the bike now has an AWESOMELY powerful ignition spark. Why is this a problem? Well...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/t0MZT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i.imgur.com/t0MZT.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/DcGXG.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i.imgur.com/DcGXG.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After a test ride that spark plug was looking a bit roasted. Meaning that the bike is running a touch rich. Hooray awesome ignition, boo poor carburetion.<br />
<br />
Luckily main jet changes on the Keihin CR29 specials are stupidly easy. Remove the float bowl drain plug and boom, there are your main jets peeking out at you.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i.imgur.com/xR02m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://i.imgur.com/xR02m.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Not so luckily, for some reason I have 2 sets of #120 mains and no #125, #128, or #130 jets. I have no idea what happened to them, but I only had #110 and of course #120's which were already in there.<br />
<br />
Oh well, I had to let her go home like this. She was running strong and there's no lean condition at all above 1/4 throttle. Even up to 1/2 throttle the plugs looked fine. 3/4-full throttle was where it was an issue with being overly lean but the owner has been instructed to take her easy until she returns next week for an oil change.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-50148968448279651662012-05-23T09:29:00.002-07:002012-06-19T09:53:03.709-07:00Baby's first leakdown test<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I still can't find the source of this idle surge on the '76 GL1000, so I decided to start from scratch.<br />
I ran a leakdown test on all the cylinders at TDC to check for valve issues. I could have pulled the camshafts and performed the test throughout the piston's movement range to see if there's a particular problem spot on the cylinder walls or piston rings but I'll wait on that for now and just run a compression check next.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Since the plugs were out I decided to check them. <br />
They look a little dark so at least it's not a lean condition.<br />
Most importantly they're all the same color.<br />
This is evidence against an intake runner leak on one carb.</td></tr>

It's important to note I performed this test on a cold motor. It's generally better to warm up the motor first as your numbers will be more accurate. However, there were still no glaringly obvious problems indicated by these results.</div>
<div>

<div>
I suppose the next move will be to compression check the cylinders and see if they are good in that aspect.</div>gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2509610466526370087.post-17908803751276615162012-05-17T13:26:00.001-07:002012-06-19T09:54:32.948-07:00Migoto, it's time to leave the nest.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The K3 made it's trek home last night. I'm sure it'll be back for some touch-ups (and decals), in the near future. In the meantime it'll be tearin' up the streets.</div>

Proud owner of a shiny red 07 Ninja 650, I met "Quentin" over on the VADriven.com message board. As it turns out he lives about 5 miles from me.<br />
I agreed to help him swap out is chains and sprockets on the one condition that he learns as much as he can from his track experience tomorrow. I didn't snap any pictures this visit because we were pressed for time, but hopefully he'll come back for a follow-up.<br />
<br />
The whole process took a little over 2.5 hours. It was about an hour more than I expected it to be however half the time was spent trying to secure the bike and get it in the air. Lacking bike lifts myself, it didn't help matters that his 650was without a centerstand. However after a good bit of poking, prodding, and searching, I determined that it would be safe to lift the bike with a car jack and 4x6" board under the swingarm at the pivot point. I had him hold the bike while I got the back tire ever so slightly off the ground. Satisfied with the balance, I secured the bike further with ratchet straps around the front forks hung from the garage door rafters, and car jackstands under the footpegs. The weight of the bike balanced well across all 5 lift points we proceeded to remove the sprockets, chain and wheel.<br />
<br />
The front sprocket came out first, and without a hitch. There was a good build up of tar and grease but not much else, which is a good sign of a careful owner. The toughest part of the operation was getting the sprocket retainer nut off. Thank god for air tools. The chain slid right out with the sprocket, then the rear axle was unbolted and the wheel slid right out. A cutting wheel made short work of the chain and while I cleaned everything up and put the new front sprocket on, Quentin removed and replaced the rear sprocket with an anodized red aluminum replacement. I positioned the chain on the front sprocket, slid the rear wheel on, mounted up the chain properly and realized, "holy crap I can't find my homemade chain rivet tool." I had made a riveter out of part of a pipe flaring tool and some c-clamps, but it was nowhere to be found. So I reverted to my Motion Pro chain breaker/riveter tool and it seemed to work well enough. It didn't mushroom or curl the rivets like my homemade tool does but there was obvious squishing of them, so I'm sure they'll hold.<br />
<br />
Chain tightened, wheel aligned, and bike lowered, he took off ready for his track-day ride. Hopefully the weather holds out and he gets a whole day of riding in. Good luck buddy, and ride safe.gnarlycharlie4uhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06601479090778920946noreply@blogger.com2
